Resilience, why it matters for your child by Dr. Munn Saechao, Online Therapist for Professional Women of Color and Child & Adolescent Psychotherapist in Mountain View, CA.

Resilience is necessary to successfully navigate life challenges. Resilience begins to develop early in childhood and persists throughout one’s life.

Resilience is a critical characteristic to have because it allows us to work through challenges, and we all know there is no shortage of life challenges. In fact, once we work through one challenge we will be presented with another. What’s important is how we understand and respond to those challenges. Resilience is key to successfully navigating life challenges.

Each time we are encouraged to keep going by the people who support us, we begin to internalize the message that we can do it, which enhances our sense of agency and self-efficacy.

Each time we are told “I am disappointed in you…you’re always doing it wrong,” we begin to internalize shame messages that we aren’t good enough, and therefore self-doubt and self-defeating statements unconsciously emerge.

Shame messages, once internalized, are toxic and inform negative automatic thoughts about the self.

Help nurture and cultivate a healthy sense of self in your child by cultivating their resilience. Do so by speaking to them messages of strength, encouragement, motivation and hope.
